Two years ago, I came to Singapore at the end of a yearlong trip with a couple backpacks and a bit of debt. I was beginning to become obsessed with photography at that point, and this country felt like photo heaven to me.
For a while now, I’ve wanted to pursue photography as a career. Even though I’ve loved my time living in Singapore, I’ll be leaving to return home in the next few months as there are a lot of limitations as someone staying here on a work pass (aka it’s illegal for me to have a second job).
Anyway, my interest in photo led to an interest in filmmaking, and I started trying to pick up as much as I could last year during lockdown. I’ve been really hesitant to post anything because I’m pretty critical of my work and usually convince myself that a lot of what I create sucks.
But still, I’ve been starting to put together some projects as a sort of portfolio for once I get back home, and here’s the first one.
When I left the US eight years ago, it was mainly due to a curiosity to see the world and pursuing a lifestyle built around travel. As a photographer, it’s been difficult at times to remain motivated without travel during the past year, but I guess I’ve tried my best to adapt and find motivation in other ways. Hopefully this project captures at least a little bit of that mindset of finding inspiration close to home.
